Atonement Jamaica Mission Project
What is Sunbeam Children's Home? It is a home to 36
boys who do not have a home of there own. It is located near Spanish
Town (near Kingston) in Jamaica.
What is SAM? SAM is Sunbeam Association for Mission,
an independent non-profit group of three Lutheran congregations
formed a year ago to further the work of Sunbeam Children's Home in
caring for the boys.
Why should Sunbeam Children's Home be Supported? In
the past ten years, Atonement has helped build chicken coops, solar heaters, a computer lab, classrooms and many maintenance projects.
However, in a culture of extreme poverty and too little funding, it
was never certain how financial gifts would be used. With the
ownership of Sunbeam, there is more control of where assets go.
We are not confined to only gifts that are given directly to the
boys for their immediate use. We are able to provide better care
of the boys.
Who runs Sunbeam? The Staff are
native Jamaicans. They include a superintendent, a housemother, a cook and laundry
worker, a farm supervisor and woodshop supervisor. Sherri Bibalke is
the Minnesota Executive Director and has an office at Peace Lutheran
Church.
What can I do? How can I make a difference? SAM is committed to
providing the financial support needed by Sunbeam to serve the children in the
home. They are also committed to helping spiritually with their
upbringing. You can make a difference by remembering Sunbeam in your
prayers and by helping with the ongoing financial needs for the Children's Home.
