Atonement Lutheran Church, St. Cloud Minnesota

Reaching Up + Reaching Out

Reaching up to God

Reaching out to others

Atonement goes to Washington
Sleeping accommodations were
tight. If you can imagine five girls
and one counselor or in a room smaller
tha an Atonement Sunday school
room...very interesting. The boys
were housed across the street in the
church annex...they had about 20
boys and male counselors in one
room (a little bigger than a Sunday
school room!). Showers were lim-
ited and happened every other day at
the homeless shelter.
During the week of July, ten
Atonement senior high students
participated in a servant event in
Washington, D.C. The group jour-
neyed to the nation's Capital by
van...a two day trip. Upon arriving
at the Tenth Avenue Baptist Church
in Washington, they were greeted
Bt the Youth Works staff. Youth-
Works is a non-profit organizations
located in Minneapolis that's pur-
pose is to provide life-changing,
Christ-centered youth mission op-
portunities.

The Students were divided in work
teams. One team spent the week
working at a Salvation Army Day
Camp for urban children. They
played with the children and often
helped settled arguments. Another
group worked at an area food shelf
and distributed lunches to the
homeless that gather on Dupont
Circle. They also worked at a preg-
nancy crisis center sorting clothing
for client needs. The third group
spent time working in the city parks
for a project called "Washington
Parks and People." Their main du-
ties were picking up trash which
included everything from bottles to
needles. This group also spent two
days at a senior citizens daycare
which had many Alzheimer clients.
Another group spent time working
at a homeless shelter.
Cards on someone who lived during
the holocaust and their history...if
they survived or not. One of our
students had the id card for a man
who not only survived the holocaust
but was a volunteer at the museum.
Many of the students went out of
their comfort zone on this trip. The
work was hard, mentally, physically
and emotionally. They are com-
mended on their willingness to give
of themselves in Jesus' name.
There were various activities
planned for the evenings such as a
tour of the war memorials, a scaven-
ger hunt in Union Depot and a com-
munity barbeque. Evenings ended
with large group devotions and
church group discussion and prayer.
By bedtime everyone was exhausted
and morning came quickly.

The students ended their time at
Youth Works on Friday morning and
set off to do some sightseeing. They
visited the National Holocaust Mu-
seum. When we entered the mu-
seum they were given identification
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. - Philippians 4:13

2006 Jamaica Mission trip
Thank you, Atonement families, for the outpouring of support that you gave to our Jamaica Mission team and to the boys at sunbeam! We greatly appreciated your monetary donations which helped defray the cost of our trip. The staff and boys at sunbeam were grateful for the gifts of new dinnerware and books which you so generously provided for them. Thanks also for your prayers for our safety and ministry to the boys. We definitely felt God's presence with us.

Please continue to pray for the boys and support them financially if you are able. The needs of the home are great and as part owner of sunbeam, Atonement has a great responsibility to meet those needs. If you would like to know more about sponsoring a boy at sunbeam, there is information available on the counter across from the office.

With gratitude, the 2006 Jamaica Mission Team:

Pat Buttweiler, Paula Dobbertin, Kathleen Engel, Debbie Krogstad, Kris Lehman, Marilyn Lisbon, Scott Schmitt, Donna Smith, and Mel Bigalke.
